For our January Community Day, we welcomed Jordan, a local Mechanical Engineer, to join us for the morning in our Kindergarten program. He talked with our students about the role of an Engineer and how Engineers contribute to our community. He then demonstrated how to make structures stronger by changing their shape as well as why we use simple machines to do work. The class then worked with Jordan to create a pulley system to lift a large bucket of water that they could not lift without the simple machine. We then spent the remainder of the day using different loose parts and building materials to create with and to solve problems. Overall we learned that there are all different types of Engineers. We learned that Engineers use science and math to solve problems. Engineers also build and test things. Each time they re-design it, the solution can get better. We had a great day learning, solving problems, and being creative!
